153 dead in Madrid airport crash

Ambulances and rescue workers gather near the site where a Spanair jet crashed on takeoff at Madrid airport on Wednesday. A Spanish airliner taking 175 people to the Canary Islands crashed Wednesday while trying to take off from Madrid’s Barajas airport, killing 153 people aboard, officials said.
