Russia-U.S. nuclear deal on hold

A key civil nuclear agreement between Russia and the U.S. looks likely to be shelved until next year at the earliest amid mounting tensions over the fate of Georgia’s breakaway republics.

  • Each year thousands of people gather to hurl truckloads of tomatoes at each other. Local lore says the yearly tradition began in the mid-1940s with a food battle that broke out between youngsters near a vegetable stand on the town square in Bunol, Spain. Spanish revelers have pelted each with 113 tons of ripe tomatoes in an annual food fight. Town hall says an estimated 40,000 people took part in the hour of messy fun in the village of Bunol.

  • In the city where the classic "Margherita" with mozzarella, tomato and basil topping was invented, 30 cooks lit up six wood-burning ovens to cook 5,000 thin-crusted Neapolitan pizzas for lines of local people and tourists.“Pizzaioli” or pizza chefs in Naples, birthplace of the Margherita, handed out free pizzas on Wednesday in protest at high prices charged by rivals who, they say, use the spike in commodity prices to rip off consumers.

  • Swiss clear Europe’s last executed witch

    Documents, paintings, engravings, illustrations and torture instruments are on display at the Anna Goeldi Musueum in Mollis, Switzerland.  Anna Goeldi was executed for being a witch more than 220 years ago — the last witch beheaded in Europe. On Wednesday, the Swiss decided the least they could do was clear her name.

    Beatriz Reyes Ojeda, one of the survivors of the Aug. 20 crash exits a press conference at the Infanta Sofia hospital near Madrid.A woman who survived last week’s devastating plane crash said Tuesday the aircraft lacked power during takeoff, corroborating other survivor accounts of what went wrong in the disaster that killed 154 people.
